I went to see Bob at Central Maine Conditioning Clinic for my knee injury after two weeks went by  since I visited the doctor and my attempts to run last week were not fruitful.

Every time I would get outside, or on the treadmill, and make it a half a mile before the pain made me stop.

It has now been 5 weeks since the last time I ran.

So I went to see Bob on Monday (Monday?! God I’m an awful blogger). I regret not going and seeing him earlier, I really do. My primary care doc felt the back of my knee joint a bit and said “it’s not too swollen, so I don’t think anything is torn. Just don’t run on it.”

When the receptionist at the Conditioning Clinic told me it was going to be an hour long visit, I scoffed at that. I’m used to paying $20 for a doctor to spend about 5 minutes with me. It’s the truth, isn’t it?

But Bob really did take an hour. He did all sorts of tests to find out what kind of motions was causing the pain, and we figured it out it was my peroneus muscle, which connects the fibia, one of the small bones in the lower leg, to the sides of the foot. This muscle is used when you pull your foot out to the side.

It hurts to run because I have high arches and when I run (being a woman and all that, too) my foot splays out to the side slightly. It felt like the pain was in my knee because that’s where the muscle connects at the top.

Mystery solved. The good news is that it’s nothing serious, just a sprain, and I’m likely back to running next week.

I even feel like I could be back to running earlier than that, but I won’t push it. I’ve been getting a workout in 5-7 days a week in the 5 weeks since I stopped running. Mostly swimming, some stationary cycling, not as much weight training as I should. Motivation to lift weights comes and goes for me. Bob gave me some PT exercises I need to work in as well.

Downside is that I definitely will be on the sidelines for the Midwinter Classic. A 10-mile race next week when I haven’t run at all in 5 weeks? I think it’s a bad idea. This is my first race ever I will have to sit out because of an injury.
