It’s a lot easier the second time around

It’s been more than two days since the marathon and I feel better than great.

It’s so much easier than it was last time – I remember the agony of walking to the printer, and I w’s so sore I didn’t even want to drive, let alone walk to work.

I’ve walked both the past two days and I feel strong. There is barely and residual soreness at this point, unless you count the nasty blister on my pinky toe that has swelled and made me freak out about diabetes.

Tony: “You’re not blogging about how you think you have diabetes, are you?”

No, I didn’t really think that, he’s joking. I was watching the HBO special “The Weight of the Nation” about America’s obesity epidemic and … it was just scary. It’s crazy to think that your body isn’t capable of healing a sore on an extremity and before you know it! a foot is gone.

Um, yes, see earlier paragraph. I am feeling very good about my body’s ability to heal right now.

The obesity epidemic is such an overwhelming topic. It’s telling that you have this glossy documentary with experienced doctors describing all the ways that being fat is killing us and yet … several of the experts themselves were moderately overweight. It’s not a question of willpower.

A day doesn’t go by when I think that there isn’t a chance that could be me again. And it’s scary what that does to you, aside from all the emotional ad social reasons it’s hard to be overweight. Diabetes, for one. Or heart disease — you’re heart gets huge and weak trying to pump more blood to all that body.

I’m restless trying to rest. That’s such a turn around from a few weeks ago. I went into the race a little in the under trained side, which I think was a good thing, and now I feel like I haven’t adequately earned this recovery. I’m ready for the next thing!

The plan is to keep walking and do some easy cycling tomorrow. Then we’ll see what the weekend holds.
