Balance

I’m still feeling a little blah about training. I’ve written enough posts focusing on the negative, so here is what I’m doing about it.

I found a quote the other day that went like this: “You can accept things the way they are, or you can accept responsibility to change them.” It was on the Food is Fuel blog, which is the chronicle of one man’s journey from morbid obesity to health. In the context he used it, he meant to say that he stopped accepting that he was going to be fat forever. I’m blogging from my phone so I don’t have the link on hand, but I’ll try to post it later.

I’ve been thinking about that statement a lot this week. It’s a powerful one. There is the part you get right away — take action in your life. But there is the other part: Accept that which you cannot change.

I’m not giving up on my goals because I’ve had a bad week or two. I’m still going to run Sugarloaf in 4 weeks no matter how this training goes. I can tell I am unhappy because I am bored, and I am struggling to maintain balance. The training requires a lot of time and energy right now, and I don’t have much will to give it.

So I spent this weekend trying to fix that balance. And it was a great weekend. I saw 3 different groups of friends over the course of the weekend. I did a 12-miler on Saturday morning with a friend i had never run with before and it felt good. Easier than it had been. I got lots of sleep and too much food. Today I went to a power yoga class that kicked my ass in all the right ways. Tony and I spent time together and played games and watched movies.

And as I am writing this, I feel more balanced. I accept the things I cannot change, and I take responsibility for the things I can.
